With a lifetime of experience in the construction industry, Doug Kohler is well-versed in architecture, engineering, residential housing, and preservation. Doug has a vast understanding of construction related finance and project specific underwriting.
Prior to becoming a licensed sales associate, Doug had a 23-year career in the construction insurance industry, specializing in surety bond underwriting. Doug worked for AIG in New York, as well as Travelers, CNA Insurance and Arch Insurance covering the New York Region, the Midwest and the International Desk. For the last 18 years, he covered the New England region.
Most recently, Doug completed two surety bond product line startups in Boston for Allied World Insurance Company and Everest Reinsurance Company, growing both companies’ portfolio of construction contractors in New England from zero to 20+ with annually recurring revenue of $5,000,000+ respectively.
Doug has been active in the Newport real estate market since 2008. In 2017, Doug worked with Mark Horan Building Company to construct a custom New England Shingle Style residence in Newport as an investment.
Since buying his first home in Newport more than a decade ago, Doug has become passionate about the Island’s rich cultural and community organizations. He is actively involved and proudly sponsors a number of local nonprofits including the Newport Restoration Foundation, the Preservation Society of Newport County, The Redwood Library & Athenaeum, The Aquidneck Land Trust and newportFILM.
Outside of the office, Doug’s hobbies include running, cycling, skiing, and all things Newport related. He is licensed in Rhode Island and Connecticut.
