Lila Delman Real Estate announced the sale today of historic “Malbone” in Newport, Rhode Island, for $1,600,000. Lila Delman Real Estate Broker Associate, Paul Tobak, and Sales Associate Lenore Leach represented the seller and Stephen Antoni , also a Broker Associate with Lila Delman Real Estate, represented the buyer.

Originally built in 1741, the estate was built as a country residence for Colonel Godfrey Malbone, a prominent shipping merchant. The porte-cochere is one of the few remains from the original residence, which burned down in 1766. Alexander Jackson Davis, one of the most influential architects of the 19th century, was commissioned in 1848 to design the castle as much of it stands today, while Dudley Newton, a local architect, was commissioned in 1875 to redesign the main hall. Among the oldest privately owned estates in Newport, it was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976 and remains a prominent historical relic with a rich past.

“The new owners share the previous owner’s enthusiasm for the history, architecture and unique grounds of this historic Newport property and look forward to becoming its new stewards,” said Paul Tobak
